Compression fittings for copper and plastic pipe

A compression fitting makes a leak-free joint without heat, solder or adhesive. The fitting body compresses a soft ring — the olive — against the pipe outer diameter as the nut is tightened, creating a mechanical seal that holds under working pressure.

They are the practical choice for most copper and plastic pipe installations where a permanent soldered joint would be more trouble than it's worth — maintenance runs, accessible pipework, and installations where you may need to dismantle and reassemble the joint in future.

The key dimension is the pipe OD. Compression fittings are sized to the outer diameter of the pipe you are working with, not the bore. Common sizes in UK domestic and light commercial work are 15mm and 22mm copper; industrial and heating applications also use 28mm and above.

For plastic pipe, confirm the pipe is suitable for compression fittings — not all types are, particularly softer plastics that can distort under compression. Insert supports are available where the pipe wall is too thin to hold its shape without reinforcement.
