Instantaneous couplings for fire and emergency water systems

Instantaneous couplings are the standard for fire hose connections in the UK. The design uses a quarter-turn bayonet mechanism — the male and female halves lock together with a short rotation, creating a secure joint that holds under the pressures used in fire fighting and emergency water supply.

The profile is standardised across UK fire service equipment, which is why the fittings are often called fire hose couplings in the trade. That standardisation means any coupling conforming to the UK instantaneous standard will mate with any other, regardless of manufacturer — which matters in emergency situations where equipment from different sources needs to be combined quickly.

Materials are aluminium and stainless steel. Aluminium is lighter and the more common choice for portable hose reel and fire fighting equipment. Stainless steel is used where corrosion resistance is a priority — permanent installations, marine environments, and high-humidity locations.

Applications beyond the fire service include industrial water curtain systems, temporary water supply during events and construction, standpipe equipment and civil emergency response. Any application where a secure large-bore water connection needs to be made and broken quickly.
