Why the Hose Matters to the Finish
A bad air or paint hose introduces problems at the gun that you can't fix at the gun. Pressure drop along an undersized or damaged hose means inconsistent atomisation. Contamination from a degrading inner bore means finish defects. In industrial coating and automotive refinishing, where the cost of a poor finish is measured in rework time and material waste, this is not a trivial specification. Learn more in our guide: The Essential Guide to Buying a Spray Paint Gun.
For airless spray equipment, the hose needs to handle the working pressure of the pump, which on high-output industrial airless systems can be 250 bar or more. The hose also needs to be compatible with the coating being sprayed. Solvent-based materials require hose with a solvent-resistant inner bore. Some coatings, two-part epoxies, and polyurethanes can attack a standard rubber bore. Check material compatibility before specifying. For conventional air-assisted spray, the air supply hose and the fluid hose have different requirements. The air hose needs to be clean and moisture-free (use a moisture separator on the compressor output). The fluid hose needs to be sized correctly for the viscosity and flow rate of the material.
Hose length also matters. Longer hoses introduce more pressure drop and increase the risk of condensation in air lines. Keep runs as short as practical for the application.

Frequently Asked Questions
What pressure does an airless paint hose need to handle?
Airless spray systems typically operate at 100–250 bar depending on the equipment and material. The hose must be rated at or above the maximum working pressure of your pump. Check your equipment specification.
Can I use a standard air hose for spray painting?
For the air supply to a conventional spray gun, a clean, dry air hose in the correct bore is suitable. For airless systems where the hose carries pressurised paint directly, you need a specialist airless spray hose rated for the working pressure and compatible with the coating material.
How do I know if my paint hose is the right bore?
The hose bore needs to match the connections on your pump and gun. Standard airless spray connections use a 1/4" NPS thread. Check your equipment fittings before ordering.
How should I clean a paint hose after use?
Flush with the appropriate solvent for the coating type (water for water-based, mineral spirits or dedicated cleaner for solvent-based) immediately after use. Leaving coating to dry in the hose risks blockage and bore degradation.
