Brass is the standard material for hose fittings in UK pneumatic, hydraulic and general plumbing applications. Thread form is where most ordering errors happen. BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the standard in the UK, but it comes in two variants. Size designation in BSP follows the pipe bore, not the fitting OD. A 1/4 BSP fitting is not 6.35mm across the thread: it is the thread size associated with a 1/4-inch nominal bore pipe. This catches out buyers used to metric measurement. If in doubt, measure the thread OD and check it against a BSP thread chart.

Brass is not suitable for acetylene gas lines or for contact with certain aggressive chemicals, particularly ammonia-based fluids. In those applications, use stainless steel or specialist material fittings rated for the specific fluid.
