Choosing automotive hose for vehicles and transport

Automotive hose applications divide into a few distinct categories, and the hose construction for each differs. Fuel hose must be internally compatible with petrol, diesel and biodiesel, with permeation resistance to prevent fuel vapour from passing through the wall. Oil and hydraulic hoses need to resist the lubricants and fluids they carry without swelling or degrading internally. Air line hose for brake and suspension systems needs to hold working pressure reliably through constant flexing.

Standard rubber hose is not suitable for fuel applications. Petrol and diesel will degrade the internal lining of a hose not rated for fuel contact, leading to contamination, cracking and eventual failure. Fuel hose is lined with a fluoroelastomer or nitrile compound specifically chosen for fuel compatibility. Using the wrong hose on a fuel line is a fire risk.

Temperature is always a factor in the engine bay. Automotive hoses are exposed to elevated ambient temperatures from the engine and exhaust, plus the temperature of the fluid or air running through them. Check the working temperature range of any hose against the maximum likely temperature at the installation point before fitting.

When ordering a replacement hose, note the internal diameter (ID), external diameter (OD), overall length, and fitting types at each end. For pre-made hose assemblies, the end fitting type and thread size also need to match. If the original hose is worn or damaged, work from the system specification rather than the hose dimensions alone, as a degraded hose may have changed shape since installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of hose is used for fuel lines?

Fuel lines require hose specifically rated for fuel compatibility: typically lined with nitrile rubber or fluoroelastomer (FKM) compounds that resist petrol, diesel and biodiesel without swelling or degrading internally. Standard rubber hose is not suitable for fuel applications. The hose must also have low permeability to prevent fuel vapour from passing through the wall.

Can I use standard rubber hose for fuel transfer?

No. Standard rubber hose will degrade in contact with petrol, diesel or other hydrocarbons, leading to internal contamination, cracking and eventual failure. Only use hose specifically rated and tested for fuel transfer. Using the wrong hose on a fuel line is a fire risk.

What is air brake hose used for?

Air brake hose carries compressed air through the brake circuit on commercial vehicles, HGVs, buses and trailers. It must withstand the working pressure of the pneumatic brake system, resist abrasion and flexing in the chassis environment, and remain functional across the vehicle's operating temperature range. Replacement hose must meet the pressure specification of the original component.

How do I identify the right replacement automotive hose?

Note the internal diameter (ID), external diameter (OD) and overall length of the hose being replaced. For pre-made assemblies, you also need the fitting type and thread size at each end. Where the original hose has degraded, work from the system specification rather than the measured dimensions. If unsure, call our team on 01282 604002 with the vehicle make, model and application.

Do you supply hose for HGVs and commercial vehicles?

Yes. The range includes fuel hose, air brake hose and general automotive hose suited to commercial vehicles and HGVs. Orders over £200 to England and Wales qualify for free delivery. Call 01282 604002 for technical queries or non-standard requirements.
