A retractable air hose reel uses an internal coil spring to automatically wind the hose back onto the drum when it is released. The hose extends under tension and locks at set intervals, staying extended while in use. To retract it, pull slightly on the hose to release the lock and the spring draws it back. This removes the need to manually wind the hose and keeps it clear of the floor between uses.

Choose based on the distance from the mounting point to the furthest point of use. For a single-bay garage, 10 to 15 metres covers most situations. For larger workshops where the reel feeds a wider working area, 20 to 30 metres gives more flexibility. Allow some extra length if the reel is mounted high on a wall, as the hose must reach down to the work area before extending horizontally.

Most air hose reels come with a mounting bracket for wall or ceiling fixing. Position the reel so the hose extends toward the main working area. Fix the bracket to solid masonry or structural timber using appropriate fixings for the load. The reel should be at a height that allows the hose to extend and retract freely without kinking over the drum lip. Check the hose inlet is connected to the air supply before use.

Air hose reels for workshop and garage use are typically rated to 20 bar (300 psi), which is above the output of most portable and workshop compressors. The relevant specifications to check are the working pressure of the hose on the reel and the pressure rating of the swivel connection at the drum. Both should exceed the maximum pressure of your air supply.

Not all air hose reels are rated for water use. Reels designed for air service use rubber hose and swivel connectors suited to compressed air. Some general-purpose reels are rated for both. Check the product specification before using an air reel with water, as water can damage components not designed for it. Dedicated water hose reels are available if both applications are needed.

A coil spring inside the drum stores energy as the hose is pulled out. When the hose is released, the spring rewinds the drum, drawing the hose back in. A ratchet locks the hose at intervals to prevent it creeping back during use. To retract, pull the hose slightly past the nearest lock position to disengage the ratchet, release it, and the spring takes over. The hose winds smoothly back onto the drum.
