Pneumatic Hose Reels
Discover The Hosemaster's range of air hose reels, keeping pneumatic hoses stored, protected, and ready to deploy in workshops, garages, and commercial premises. The range covers retractable spring-return reels and manual reels for wall or ceiling mounting, in hose lengths from 10 to 30 metres. Where a trailing air line would be a trip hazard or leave the hose coiled on the floor between uses, a wall-mounted reel is the practical solution. Free delivery over £200 to England and Wales.

How to choose an air hose reel
Hose left coiled on a workshop floor gets damaged, causes trips, and takes time to untangle. A wall-mounted reel keeps it controlled, extends it to where it is needed, and stores it automatically when not in use. The difference between a good reel and a frustrating one tends to show up after a few months of use, a spring that is too weak for the hose length, a swivel that weeps, or a drum that binds on retract.
The most common type is the spring-return retractable reel. A coil spring inside the drum stores energy as the hose is pulled out and rewinds it automatically when the hose is released. A ratchet mechanism locks the hose at set intervals, keeping it extended while in use, to retract it, pull the hose slightly past the lock point, release, and the spring takes over. This is the standard choice for busy workshops and garages where speed of use matters.
Manual reels do not have a return spring. The hose is wound back by hand. They suit applications where the hose is extended and left in place for long periods, a fixed feed to a piece of equipment, for example, rather than tools that are picked up and put down repeatedly.
Hose length is straightforward: choose enough reach that the reel can be mounted in a sensible position without the hose falling short at the far end of the work area. For a typical single-bay garage, 10 to 15 metres covers most situations. For larger workshops feeding multiple bays or a longer floor, 20 to 30 metres gives more flexibility. Allow extra length if the reel will be mounted high on a wall, as the hose must reach down to the work area before extending horizontally.
The hose on most air reels is rubber, rated to the same working pressures as standard air hose assemblies. The reel drum, swivel connection, and inlet fitting see the most wear, the overall build quality of the reel matters as much as the hose itself. Most reels come with a wall or ceiling mounting bracket included.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a retractable air hose reel?
A retractable air hose reel uses an internal coil spring to automatically wind the hose back onto the drum when it is released. The hose extends under tension and locks at set intervals, staying extended while in use. To retract it, pull slightly on the hose to release the lock and the spring draws it back. This removes the need to manually wind the hose and keeps it clear of the floor between uses.
What length hose reel do I need?
Choose based on the distance from the mounting point to the furthest point of use. For a single-bay garage, 10 to 15 metres covers most situations. For larger workshops where the reel feeds a wider working area, 20 to 30 metres gives more flexibility. Allow some extra length if the reel is mounted high on a wall, as the hose must reach down to the work area before extending horizontally.
How do I mount a hose reel to a wall?
Most air hose reels come with a mounting bracket for wall or ceiling fixing. Position the reel so the hose extends toward the main working area. Fix the bracket to solid masonry or structural timber using appropriate fixings for the load. The reel should be at a height that allows the hose to extend and retract freely without kinking over the drum lip. Check the hose inlet is connected to the air supply before use.
What pressure rating do air hose reels have?
Air hose reels for workshop and garage use are typically rated to 20 bar (300 psi), which is above the output of most portable and workshop compressors. The relevant specifications to check are the working pressure of the hose on the reel and the pressure rating of the swivel connection at the drum. Both should exceed the maximum pressure of your air supply.
Can a hose reel be used with water as well as air?
Not all air hose reels are rated for water use. Reels designed for air service use rubber hose and swivel connectors suited to compressed air. Some general-purpose reels are rated for both. Check the product specification before using an air reel with water, as water can damage components not designed for it. Dedicated water hose reels are available if both applications are needed.
How does a spring-return hose reel work?
A coil spring inside the drum stores energy as the hose is pulled out. When the hose is released, the spring rewinds the drum, drawing the hose back in. A ratchet locks the hose at intervals to prevent it creeping back during use. To retract, pull the hose slightly past the nearest lock position to disengage the ratchet, release it, and the spring takes over. The hose winds smoothly back onto the drum.
