Load moreThe complete guide to pneumatic components
Pneumatics is the use of pressurised air to power tools, actuate machinery, and control industrial processes. In a workshop or production environment, compressed air travels from the compressor through a network of tubing and fittings before reaching the tool or actuator at the end of the line. Each part of that circuit has a job to do, and getting the wrong component in the wrong place costs time.
Pneumatic Tubing (nylon, polyurethane, or rubber depending on the application) carries the air. Push-in Fittings connect sections of tubing, change direction, split flows, or terminate lines. Push-in fittings grip by collet ring and release with a push of the sleeve, which makes assembly and reconfiguration fast. Sizes run from 4mm to 16mm OD in metric, with BSP threaded ports for connection to valves and tools.
Quick Release Air Couplers and Adaptors handle the point where tools connect to the airline. The key practical point is coupler compatibility: PCL, Euro, and other profile types are not interchangeable without an adaptor, so it pays to standardise across a site or carry adaptors. Hose Assemblies are pre-built lengths of rubber or PVC air hose fitted with couplers at each end, ready to use straight away.
For tidier workspaces, Hose Reels wind the hose away when not in use. Spring-return retractable reels are common in workshops and garages. Recoil Airlines serve a similar purpose at bench level: the coiled polyurethane hose extends under tension and returns when released, eliminating trailing hose at fixed workstations.
Air Filters, Regulators and Oilers protect equipment and ensure consistent performance. Filters remove water and particulate from the compressed air supply. Regulators let you set the working pressure for a tool or circuit. Oilers inject a fine mist of lubricant into the air stream to protect pneumatic tools with moving parts. These three functions are often combined in a single FRL unit.
Blowguns connect to the airline and are used to clear swarf, dust, and debris from workpieces and machinery. Silencers and Accessories fit to exhaust ports on valves and cylinders to reduce the noise of air venting to atmosphere; in a busy production environment, they make a meaningful difference.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is pneumatics?
Pneumatics is the use of compressed air to transmit force and control motion. In practical terms, it covers air-powered tools, pneumatic cylinders, and the tubing, fittings, couplers, and valves that connect them to a compressor. The Hosemaster stocks the consumable and connective parts of pneumatic systems: tubing, push-in fittings, couplers, hose assemblies, FRL units, and accessories.
What types of pneumatic fittings are there?
The main types are push-in fittings, which grip tubing by collet and release with a sleeve push; BSP threaded fittings for connection to ports on valves, tools and regulators; and quick-release couplers for tool changes under pressure. Push-in fittings come in straight connectors, elbows, tees, crosses, and reducers, in metric sizes from 4mm to 16mm OD.
What is a quick release air coupler?
A quick release air coupler is a two-part connector, a male plug and female socket, that locks under pressure and allows a tool to be disconnected and reconnected without shutting off the air supply. The female socket closes automatically when the plug is removed, preventing air loss. PCL and Euro are the two most common profile types in UK workshops.
What does an air filter regulator do?
An air filter removes water, oil vapour, and particulate from compressed air before it reaches tools or processes. A regulator controls the downstream pressure. Used together, they protect equipment, extend tool life, and allow different tools on the same circuit to run at their correct pressures. An oiler adds a fine lubricant mist for tools with internal moving parts.
What size pneumatic tubing do I need?
Tube size is determined by the flow rate required and the port sizes of the fittings and devices at each end. Common sizes for general workshop use are 6mm and 8mm OD. Larger diameters, 10mm, 12mm, and 16mm, are used where higher flow or longer runs demand less restriction. Always match the tube OD to the fitting collet size.
When do I need a pneumatic silencer?
A pneumatic silencer fits to the exhaust port of a valve or cylinder and reduces the noise of air venting to atmosphere. They are most useful in applications with frequent cycling, such as automated machinery or production lines, where unsilenced exhausts generate significant noise. Silencers are available in BSP thread sizes to match standard valve ports.
