Pipe plugs and caps for sealing ports and line ends

Plugs and caps do the same job from opposite sides of a fitting. A plug is male-threaded and screws into a female port to seal it. A cap is female-threaded and goes over a male fitting or pipe end to protect it from contamination or seal it off.

The most common use is sealing unused ports on valves, manifolds and hydraulic blocks. Any open port in a pressurised system is a potential leak point, and on systems that sit idle between uses it is also an entry point for contamination. The right plug, correctly torqued with the appropriate sealant or PTFE tape, closes that off.

Caps are often used to protect male fittings during storage or shipping, and to blank off lines during maintenance when a component has been removed and the system needs to stay clean.

Brass is the standard material for most hydraulic, pneumatic and water applications. Steel plugs are used on higher-pressure hydraulic systems. Nylon caps work well for dust and contamination protection where no pressure is involved.

Thread sizes cover BSP and metric. If you need to seal multiple ports on a manifold or valve block, buying in a small quantity is more economical than ordering one at a time.

What material plug should I use for a hydraulic system?

Brass works for most general hydraulic applications. Steel is the better choice on high-pressure hydraulic circuits where thread strength is a factor. For any system carrying more than 250 bar, verify the pressure rating of the fitting before installation.

Can I use a plug to seal an unused port on a valve body?

Yes. Plugs are one of the most common ways to blank off unused ports on valve bodies and manifolds. Use thread sealant or PTFE tape appropriate to the medium, and torque to the fitting manufacturer's specification.
