Using the wrong hose in a food or drink production environment isn't just a quality problem; it's a regulatory one. Hose that isn't rated for food contact can leach compounds into the product. Auditors will flag it. Buyers will ask for your HACCP documentation. And if something goes wrong, traceability back to a non-compliant hose is not where you want to be.

A food-grade hose needs to meet a few things. The inner bore material must be approved for contact with the relevant foodstuff; milk requires different materials to beer, and beer to edible oil. FDA 21 CFR and EC Regulation 1935/2004 are the main standards to check against. WRAS approval is required for hoses used in drinking water supply. Construction matters too. Food-grade hoses should be smooth-bore to prevent product trapping and bacterial growth; easy to clean in place (CIP) or to remove and wash; and free of plasticisers that migrate into the product under temperature. Check whether the hose you're considering is rated for hot water CIP cycles if that's part of your cleaning protocol.
