Cam and groove couplings for bulk liquid transfer

Cam and groove couplings — commonly called camlocks — connect a male adapter (the groove half) to a female coupler (the cam half) using two hinged arms that lock the coupling in place when pressed down. No tools required; connection takes a second and disconnection is equally fast.

The design is the standard for bulk liquid transfer in tankers, chemical handling, petroleum distribution and food processing. The cam and groove standard is defined in MIL-C-27487 and ISO 16028, and fittings from different manufacturers following the same standard are interchangeable.

Camlock type refers to the end configuration, not the locking mechanism. Types A through F define what the male and female halves connect to at the hose or pipe end. Type A is a male adapter with a female BSP thread. Type B is a female coupler with a male BSP thread. Type C is a female coupler with a hose tail. Type D is a female coupler with a female BSP thread. Type E is a male adapter with a hose tail. Type F is a male adapter with a male BSP thread. Check which types you need at each end of the coupling before ordering.

Materials are aluminium and stainless steel. Aluminium suits most general liquid transfer applications. Stainless steel is the choice for aggressive chemicals, food-grade applications or environments where aluminium is not appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the type letters mean on cam groove couplings?

The type letters define the end configuration of each half. Type A is a male adapter with female BSP thread; Type B is a female coupler with male BSP thread; Type C female coupler with hose tail; Type D female coupler with female BSP; Type E male adapter with hose tail; Type F male adapter with male BSP. You need one male adapter and one female coupler to make a complete connection — the type letter tells you what each half connects to at the hose or pipe end.

Are camlock fittings from different brands compatible?

Generally yes, provided both fittings conform to the same standard (MIL-C-27487 or ISO 16028). Most camlock fittings in common use follow these standards, making cross-brand connection reliable. Check the standard if you are mixing makes on critical applications.

What material should I specify for chemical transfer?

Stainless steel for most aggressive chemicals, solvents and acids. Aluminium is not compatible with some chemicals — check the material compatibility of the specific medium before specifying aluminium. Food-grade applications also typically require stainless steel.

Do you deliver camlock fittings near me?
