Air couplings for compressors and pneumatic tools

Air couplings are the quick-release fittings used to connect pneumatic hoses and tools to compressors and airline systems. They are simple to use — push the male half into the female socket and it locks in place; pull back the collar to release. Under pressure or repeated use, though, the quality of the coupling matters.

The most important thing to get right is the profile. Air coupling profiles include BSP, Euro (also known as type C), Orion, and several others. Couplings of different profiles will not mate — you cannot connect a Euro male to a BSP female, for example. Check what profile is already in use on your compressor and airline system before ordering.

After profile, the material and pressure rating matter. Most workshop air systems run at 8–10 bar. The couplings here are rated for standard workshop pressures; check the product specification if your system operates outside that range.

Male adaptors and female sockets are sold separately in most ranges, so you can mix male fittings onto hose ends and female sockets onto tools as your setup requires. If you are starting from scratch and not sure which profile to specify, BSP and Euro are the most widely used in UK workshops.
