How to select agricultural hose

Agricultural hose covers a wider range of applications than it looks at first glance. Slurry transfer and field irrigation share almost nothing in construction terms: slurry hose needs robust abrasion and chemical resistance, while lay flat hose is built for volume water movement at low pressure. Getting the construction wrong means either hose collapse under vacuum or degradation from whatever is running through it.

For suction applications, drawing water or slurry into a pump, the hose must be rated for vacuum as well as pressure. A hose with fabric braid reinforcement will collapse under the negative pressure created by the pump intake. You need a helix-reinforced hose, typically steel wire spiral or rigid wire. The vacuum rating should exceed the maximum suction your pump can generate.

Chemical resistance matters for fertiliser and pesticide transfer. Natural rubber has reasonable resistance to dilute fertiliser solutions but degrades with contact to certain solvents and concentrated chemicals. If you are running anything other than clean water or slurry, check the hose chemical resistance chart for your specific substance before ordering.

Lay flat hose is worth considering for any temporary irrigation or water transfer run. It deploys easily from a drum, lies flat across the ground without creating trip hazards from a raised bore hose, and rolls back down to a compact size for storage. Standard lay flat is not rated for elevated temperatures or chemicals: for those applications, use a rated suction and delivery hose instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of hose are used in farming?

Agricultural applications typically use suction and delivery hose for water and slurry transfer, lay flat hose for irrigation runs, ducting for crop dryers and ventilation, and specialist chemical-resistant hose for fertiliser and pesticide transfer. The right choice depends on what is being transferred, whether the hose needs to resist vacuum, and the working pressure of the pump or system it connects to.

What is slurry hose made from?

Most slurry hoses are built with a natural or synthetic rubber tube bonded to a reinforced fabric or wire spiral body, then covered with a rubber or PVC outer. The materials are chosen for resistance to abrasion, chemicals and UV that agricultural hoses encounter. For long suction runs, look for a hose with steel wire helix reinforcement to prevent collapse under vacuum.

Can I use lay flat hose for water transfer?

Yes. Lay flat hose is designed for water transfer across fields and is the standard choice for irrigation and site dewatering. It collapses flat when empty, making storage and transport straightforward. Standard lay flat hose is not rated for hot water or chemical transfer: check the specification sheet if you need those properties.

What pressure is agricultural suction hose rated to?

Working pressure varies by construction, but most agricultural suction hoses in this range are rated to 10 bar or below on the delivery side, with vacuum ratings stated separately. The suction rating matters for pump applications: an under-specified hose will collapse inward. Check both the pressure and vacuum ratings against your pump output before ordering.

Do you deliver agricultural hose to farms?

The Hosemaster delivers to all UK mainland addresses. Orders over £200 to England and Wales qualify for free delivery, with 1-2 day delivery available and same-day dispatch on most in-stock lines. For large reel quantities or urgent requirements, call 01282 604002.
