What are sandblast hoses?

Sandblast hoses are an essential part of any abrasive blasting system, acting as flexible, high strength conduits designed to withstand high pressures and the abrasive nature of a chosen blasting media. 

These hoses transport compressed air along with abrasive particles such as aluminium oxide, steel grit or glass beads. This process achieves the smooth surface finish required in many industrial applications.

Note: a sandblast hose sits between the compressor, the blast pot and the nozzle, delivering a constant flow of the air and abrasive mixture. 

A blasting hose needs to provide a consistent, steady pressure, and an even flow rate. If the hose does not perform as it should, pressure drops can occur – which may lead to uneven surface treatment and faster wear of the materials.

One crucial factor to consider when selecting a blast hose is the internal diameter (ID) of the hose. The hose should have an ID that is three to four times larger than the nozzle orifice, as this ratio helps to reduce any build up of pressure within the hose and keeps friction at a minimum. 

Top tip: a hose with an insufficient internal diameter will create extra friction. This, in turn, slows the movement of abrasive particles and can lead to premature wear.

It is important to remember that every component along the compressed air line can cause resistance to flow. Components such as air dryers, blast pots, valves, and fittings all contribute to pressure losses. The point where the abrasive material is introduced into the air line is also a place where pressure drops may occur. Keeping these factors in mind helps to explain why choosing the right hose size and quality is so important.

Understanding the construction of a blast hose

In a sandblasting system, there are three types of hoses that play a role in the delivery of air and abrasive media, each with a specific function:

Bull hoses

Also known as connection hoses, these hoses link the compressor to the blast pot, acting as the system's main support for air delivery. 

Bull hoses are typically larger in diameter, as they need to accommodate the airflow necessary for multiple nozzles, minimise pressure loss and maintain consistent operation across demanding setups.

When selecting a suitable bull hose, use a large internal diameter size to run from your compressor to your blast pot, to reduce the friction pressure loss caused by smaller hoses. For blasting at 100psi nozzle pressure, please refer to the following guide:

Blast hoses

Serving as the main hose in the system, blast hoses transport the air-abrasive mixture from the blast pot to the worksite. They act as a connection between the blast pot and the whip hose, and are usually connected via several mega max couplings to extend the length of each individual blast hose.

Proper sizing is essential for blast hoses, as mismatched diameters can affect pressure and flow rates, impacting the efficiency of surface preparation. For the highest, fastest production, it’s worth running the largest blast nozzle that your air source can support.

Whip hoses

As the final link in the system, whip hoses connect directly to the nozzle. These hoses are smaller and more flexible, designed for ease of manoeuvrability during blasting tasks. Their lightweight construction allows greater precision when working on intricate surfaces, or in confined areas.

Shorter lengths of whip hose will be more flexible and lightweight, which can make them easier to use. But, if the internal diameter is too small, the increased friction will slow the abrasive and air, decreasing productivity.

What to consider when selecting a blast hose

Choosing the right blast hose involves a detailed consideration of various factors that affect performance, safety, and long-term reliability:

Internal diameter (ID) and nozzle size

One of the primary considerations is the internal diameter relative to the nozzle size. As we touched on previously, the hose’s internal diameter should be at least three to four times larger than the nozzle’s orifice. This ratio prevents excessive pressure build-up, for a smooth, uninterrupted flow of abrasive media and compressed air. 

An undersized hose creates additional friction, which inhibits the speed of the abrasive media and accelerates wear on the hose’s internal surfaces.

Hose length

Equally important is the hose length. Shorter hoses are advantageous as they minimise friction-induced pressure drops – a vital factor in maintaining the desired blasting pressure and efficiency. 

In vertical applications however, excessive hose length can lead to significant pressure losses, ultimately impacting productivity negatively. 

Pressure rating

It is imperative that the hose’s rated pressure significantly exceeds the maximum operating pressure. A general rule is to use a 3:1 safety factor. This extra margin safeguards against unexpected pressure spikes that occur during operation. 

Remember, operating a hose near its maximum limit increases the risk of catastrophic failures that can lead to hazardous working conditions and expensive equipment downtime.

Material

High-quality compounds, such as virgin natural rubber compounded with carbon black graphite, provide superior longevity, flexibility, and resistance to wear. The configuration of reinforcement layers, whether using 2-ply or 4-ply with cross-woven cord linings, substantially contributes to the hose’s overall strength and durability. 

Additional features, including anti-static properties and verified abrasion resistance (often measured by DIN ratings or the volume of material lost), further indicate a hose’s robustness and suitability for demanding blasting applications.

Flexibility and weight

The hose must be constructed from materials that withstand abrasive conditions while remaining flexible and lightweight enough to provide comfortable handling. An overly heavy hose may lead to operator fatigue, whereas a hose that is excessively flexible might compromise structural integrity under high-pressure conditions.

Compatibility

The chosen hose must perform effectively with the specific media used, whether this is aluminium oxide, steel grit, or glass beads. For highly abrasive media, such as steel grit, a more robust construction is necessary to avoid rapid degradation and ensure a prolonged service life.

Fittings and couplings

Selecting appropriate couplings, produced in materials like brass, aluminium, or nylon and available with configurations such as 4 Claw or Spud, means that both air and media leaks are prevented. 

Although, it’s typically recommended to use nylon nozzle holders with metal-threaded nozzles to reduce wear on both the hose and its fittings.
