Y strainers are used to mechanically remove unwanted solids from liquids, gas or stream lines.

They use a perforated or wire mesh straining element to do this and are used as a means of protecting pumps, control valves, steam traps and regulators as well as other process equipment.

Y strainers are regarded as a cost-effective means of providing a straining solution and are considered the standard solution for steam applications.
