Getting Suction Hose Right

Not all hose handles suction. A standard pressure hose will collapse under vacuum; the wall simply isn't built to resist the inward force when a pump draws fluid through it. A suction hose has a reinforced construction, typically a spiral wire or rigid helix, that holds the bore open under negative pressure. That's what you need here.

For discharge, pushing fluid away from a pump, the requirements are different. The hose needs to handle the working pressure of the pump output, resist the media being transferred, and cope with whatever else the application throws at it. Abrasive slurry needs a different wall construction than clean water. Temperature matters too, especially in agricultural and industrial settings. Bore size is the most common ordering error. A hose that's too small for the pump output restricts flow and puts unnecessary load on the pump. Check the bore against your pump port size and required flow rate before ordering.
