Seals & Sealants
Shop thread sealants, PTFE tape, pipe seals and sealing compounds for water, gas and compressed air connections. PTFE tape is the standard choice for threaded joints in most plumbing and pneumatic applications; liquid thread sealants are better where the joint needs to resist vibration or where a gap-filling compound is required. Check compatibility with your medium before selecting. Free delivery on orders over £200 to England and Wales.

Load moreThread sealants, PTFE tape, and pipe seals
PTFE tape is the default choice for sealing BSP threaded joints in water, gas, and compressed air systems. It's applied to the male thread before assembly — three to four wraps, wound in the direction of the thread so that tightening doesn't unwind it. On most standard BSP fittings in domestic and workshop pipework, PTFE tape alone is sufficient.
Liquid thread sealants are the better option where the joint will be subject to vibration, where the thread is coarse, or where a degree of gap-filling is needed. Unlike PTFE tape, most liquid sealants also work on parallel (BSPP) threads, where tape is less reliable. Cure time varies by product — most achieve a working seal in a few hours and full cure in 24 hours.
For gas applications, the sealant must be explicitly approved for gas. This will be stated in the product specification. Never use a sealant on a gas fitting unless it carries the relevant approval. Sealing washers and face seal components for push-fit or compression connections are also stocked in this section.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is PTFE tape used for?
PTFE tape is wrapped around male BSP threads before assembly to help create a seal when the fitting is tightened. It is the standard method for sealing threaded joints in water and gas pipework and compressed air systems. Apply 3-4 wraps in the direction of the thread.
When should I use liquid thread sealant instead of PTFE tape?
Liquid thread sealant is useful where the joint may be subject to vibration, where the thread pitch is coarse, or where you need to fill minor imperfections. It also works on parallel (BSPP) threads, where PTFE tape alone may not provide a reliable seal.
Are your sealants suitable for gas fittings?
Some are; some are not. Always check the product specification for approval with gas — products rated for gas will state it clearly. Never use a sealant on a gas fitting unless it is explicitly approved for that medium.
How long do thread sealants take to cure?
Cure times vary by product. Most liquid sealants achieve a working seal within a few hours but reach full cure in 24 hours. Check the product data sheet for specifics.
