Choosing a Hose Reel That's Right for the Job

The difference between a good hose reel and a frustrating one tends to show up after six months. A reel that's undersized for the hose gauge doesn't retract cleanly. One that's not rated for the medium develops a leak at the swivel. And a spring mechanism that's too weak for the hose length leaves you with a pile of hose on the floor rather than a tidy retract. Get the spec right first time.

The first variable is the medium. Air reels are rated for compressed air, typically 20–30 bar working pressure through the internal passages and swivel joint. Water reels handle a different pressure range. Oil reels need to be rated for hydraulic or lubricating oil. Don't run a medium through a reel that's not rated for it. Learn more in our guide: Retractable Hose Reel Buying Guide.

Hose length and bore affect which reel you need. A spring rewind reel has a rated hose capacity, the bore and length of hose it's designed to carry. Overload it with a larger bore or longer hose and the spring won't retract it cleanly. Match the reel to the hose, not the other way around.

Wall-mounted spring rewind reels are the most common choice for workshop and garage use. They keep the hose off the floor, protect it from vehicle damage, and make it quick to deploy and retract. For fixed process lines or where the hose needs to move in two axes, a swivel arm or ceiling-mounted option may suit better.

Industrial reels for harsh environments need to be constructed from appropriate materials, such as powder-coated steel or stainless steel for washdown areas, with robust seals on the swivel for elevated pressure applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a spring rewind and a manual hose reel?

A spring rewind reel uses a coil spring to retract the hose automatically when you release it. A manual reel requires you to wind the hose back by hand. Spring rewind is more convenient for frequent use. Manual reels are simpler, cheaper, and suitable where retraction speed doesn't matter.

Can I fit my own hose to a reel?

Yes, many reels are supplied without a hose so you can fit your choice of hose. The reel will specify the maximum hose bore and length it's designed to carry; stay within that to ensure the spring mechanism works correctly.

What media can hose reels carry?

Depends on the reel. Air reels handle compressed air, water reels handle water, and oil reels are rated for lubricating and hydraulic oil. The swivel joint and internal passages need to be rated for the medium. Check the product specification.

How do I mount a wall-mounted hose reel?

Most wall-mounted reels fix to a solid wall or upright using the mounting bracket supplied. The fixing points need to support the weight of the reel plus the full hose length when extended. Use appropriate fixings for the wall type.
